With the pounding of horse’s hoofs disappearing into the night, Holt and Isabella were suddenly alone.

Holt leaned down and put more logs on the fire, not because it needed it but just for something to do whilst Isabella made Collards comfortable.

Holt stared around the now empty room, the rush of adrenalin still running through him. It had been a long time since he had felt this wired and he puffed air in an attempt to release his tension.

‘You will need a drink now,’ said Isabella coming back into the room.

‘How is he?’

‘He is not good, I just hope he will survive until the doctor gets here.’

‘That won’t be for hours,’ said Holt, crossing over to the cupboard and fetching the whiskey bottle.

‘I will have one too,’ said Isabella.

‘Sure thing, this must have been trying for you.’

‘I have seen too much of it already.’

‘I’m sorry,’ said Holt as he fetched two glasses.

‘Since a little girl,’ Isabella continued. ‘Always fighting and killing, so much hate.’

Holt poured two generous glasses, ‘I thought you were pretty well protected at the hacienda.’

‘Not always, it is better now but when I was small there was always something.’

Holt nodded and handed her a glass, ‘Not good for a little one.’

‘That is how I lost my mother,’ she said, staring into her glass. ‘And now maybe my brother also.’

‘Hey now, we don’t know that. Maybe Domingo is held up for some other reason.’

Isabella shook her head sorrowfully, ‘If he could have he would have been back here by now.’

Holt threw back his drink and Isabella surprised him by echoing his quick draught with her own.

‘Another?’ he asked.

‘Yes,’ she nodded dumbly.

Holt poured one for her and said, ‘Come on over to the fire, it ain’t cold but its warming somehow.’

She gave him a brief smile and came over, resting her glass on the ledge over the fireplace, ‘You have quite a bonfire going here.’

Holt cocked his head, ‘Sorry, I guess I got carried away.’

‘It is like that, no? After a fight, the blood is running fast and the mind has little time to think clearly.’

‘Yes,’ Holt agreed soberly, holding up his hand and seeing the fingers trembling slightly at his increased blood pressure. ‘You’d think I’d be over it by now but it’s still there.’

‘You have done this many times, Holt?’

‘Uhuh,’ agreed Holt. ‘Too many.’

Isabella leant forward over the fire, both hands on the shelf before her. The bright flames gleamed on her long skirt and the thin cotton shirt with wide sleeves that she wore. For a moment Holt was afraid that she might burn herself she was so close. He stood watching her not sure of what to do.

She was trembling; he could see the quivering of the material and without thinking he moved forward and laid a hand over hers on the shelf.

She turned, surprised by the gesture and stared at him with her dark eyes sparked by the firelight.

‘It’s okay,’ he whispered. ‘It’ll be okay.’

She swallowed and tore her eyes away from him, ‘It is not - I am being stupid.
